The 2017 Thailand GPG Runner-up stepped on to the next round after in the first round last Wednesday (14/6) he was able to overcome Taiwan's player, Hsu Jen Hao with 21-17 and 21-15.
"The challenge the match gave was the unpredictable shuttlecock direction. Sometimes it could go down quickly, it could be sideways, and sometimes it could shake. But this is experienced by all players, during the match I tried to continue to focus on how I can apply my strategy," said Jonatan.
"Playing against a tenacious player, he has a good defense. He tried to make me attack for several times so that it would make me committed blunders. But I could apply my strategy," he added.
In the second round, Jonatan will challenge the 2016 Olympic gold medalist Chen Long. The eighth seed advanced to the second round after beating Marc Zwiebler from Germany, 21-14 and 21-14.
"With the pitch like this, anyone can lose. Nothing is impossible. All can happen. Chen Long is a mature player, he has many achievements as well. After becoming the Olympic champion, he was a bit decreasing, but then he started to find his shape," added the athlete known as Jojo.
"Every athlete has their own preparation when they're about to compete, I will definitely consult to my coach on how to apply strategy and how to overcome obstacles, this will be the key for tomorrow's match," Jonatan concluded.
Jonatan becomes the only Red and White representative who advances to the second round after Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and Tommy Sugiarto failed to grab a victory. Anthony was forced to surrender 13-21 and 18-21 by India's Prannoy HS while Tommy lost another defeat at the hands of Lee Chong Wei. He lost 21-13, 10-21 and 18-21.
